Hard decline

Processing

An issuer authorization decline that should not be retried, typically signalling lost/stolen card, closed account, or active fraud block. Retrying a hard-declined transaction wastes processing fees and increases fraud-flag exposure. Must be handled distinctly from soft declines in retry logic.

In practice.

A hard decline means the issuer says stop: the card is closed, blocked or flagged. Retrying hard declines achieves nothing except damaging your reputation with issuers and tripping velocity controls. Decline-code discipline, retrying only soft declines, is a basic but often missed approval-rate practice.
