High-risk merchant
Specialist
An informal designation for merchants in verticals where chargeback exposure, regulatory complexity, or scheme rules create narrower acquirer appetite. Common examples: iGaming, crypto, forex, dating, adult, nutraceuticals. Not a card-network official designation; each acquirer applies its own classification.
In practice.
High-risk is an underwriting judgment, not an insult: it reflects expected disputes, regulatory exposure and chargeback volatility of the business model. The label mostly determines which acquirers can say yes at all. Specialist acquirers price the risk knowingly, which is usually better than a mainstream acquirer discovering it later.
